2019 LCSG Garden Bike Tour

Visit five school gardens on May 18, from 2:30-5pm; some snacks are provided; helmets are required. RSVP here for the free ride!

We will have cold filtered water to fill up your reusable bottle.  If you don’t have a bike, helmet, or water bottle, let us know and we will try to fix you up.
There will likely be plants left over from the May 11 Plant Sale – bring cash, check or card if you want to do some shopping after the ride.

We broke ground on our 19th garden at Mt Solo Middle School!

Generous support from families and businesses have made this day possible: Every elementary and middle school in Longview now has a garden (and we’ll soon be able to say the same of Kelso). Special thanks to Jammie’s Environmental, Inc. and Watkins Tractor & Supply Co. for donating big equipment and skilled operators on Wednesday, and to JH Kelly who will build the shed and some other infrastructure.

Thanks to all who support the work of Lower Columbia School Gardens

School Garden Volunteer Training plus a new offering: Pruning Workshop – Fruit Trees & Grape Vines

Hello folks!

On the mornings of February 8 and 9, we will offer, as we have for many years, our School Garden Volunteer Training. If you are interested in helping out with our local Longview/Kelso school gardens, or are developing a program in your school or community, this class is for you!  These identical classes run from 9:00 to noon – choose Friday 2/8 or Saturday 2/9. This class takes place at Northlake Elementary and is free as always.

On those same two days, in the afternoon, we are offering a brand new class: Pruning Workshop – Fruit Trees & Grape Vines. We will do some learning in the classroom and then head out to the orchard to do some hands-on pruning. These identical classes run from 1:00 to 3:00pm – choose Friday 2/8 or Saturday 2/9.

This class takes place at Northlake Elementary and is free of charge.

Register here for the Volunteer Training and/or Pruning Workshop in February 2019

Join us for The Fall Gathering

Join us for our annual celebration, re-imagined this year as The Fall Gathering. New location, new name, same great party!

Come enjoy freshly prepared food featuring produce from our 18 Longview and Kelso school gardens, as well as other locally and sustainably sourced ingredients. Enjoy live music by the Carl Wirkkala Band. Sip and savor regional beers provided by Antidote Tap House and local wine by Roland Wines, as well as fresh apple cider hand-cranked by students.

This magical evening is the largest single-day fundraiser for the School Gardens. Your attendance and support helps us continue our mission of connecting local kids and families with real food and hands-on learning.

Looking forward to 2018 Spring Garden Programs!

We can’t wait for Spring to arrive – to see new green growth emerging in the gardens, reconnect with students in their outdoor classrooms, and work alongside our amazing team of volunteers.

Our Spring Garden Season is going to look a little different this year – it is split into two 5-week sessions, with a week-long break in between:

  • Session One: March 19 – April 27 (Spring Break also falls within this first session)
  • Garden Break: April 30 – May 4
  • Session Two: May 7 – June 8

As you may already know, one day a week schools have After School Garden Clubs and/or School Day Garden Programs (during recess or scheduled class time).
In general, here’s the plan for the Spring Season:

  • After School Garden Clubs that are facilitated primarily by LCSG staff will take place during ONE of the 5-week sessions.
  • School Day Garden Programs will take place during BOTH 5-week sessions.

And yet one more way to say it: After School Garden Clubs are 5 weeks long, and School Day Garden Programs are 10 weeks long. There are some exceptions to this model, mostly involving schools where volunteer or teacher garden coordinators have stepped up and are facilitating garden programs without regular assistance from LCSG staff.

Take a look at the Spring Schedule below…

We are humbled and grateful for the ongoing support of this community. Our small staff is continually “building the plane as we are flying it”- always learning how to better distribute our time and resources more equitably in order to reach kids at all 18 School Gardens in Longview and Kelso. Your feedback and patience is appreciated and helpful as we make changes and try new things.

The School Gardens in this community are a result of many people saying, “yes!” to spaces for our kids to learn about real food, the natural world, and to practice being healthy, kind humans.

Please stay tuned for information specific to your students’ School Garden as the season approaches.

Special Evening Produce Sale this Wednesday from 5 to 7

School Garden Produce Sales have been taking place Wednesdays from 10 to 1 in the Northlake Elementary School Garden all summer long, with students proudly selling the gorgeous produce they’ve grown and tended.

This Wednesday we’re breaking a bit with tradition and hosting a special Evening Produce Sale as a last hurrah before we begin Fall Garden Programs. There are still so many beautiful fruits and vegetables to be tasted and savored before the season ends.
