Coweeman Garden

The Coweeman School Garden was started in 2015, under the leadership of Garden Champion Mrs. Saccio, whose math classroom looked out on the garden for many years. The very first season of After School Garden Club took place in Fall 2016, and each Spring and Fall since then (save for a few weird years during the Covid pandemic) there have been unique iterations of returning students along with new-to-middle-school 6th graders who just the year before were learning in their Elementary School Gardens.

The School Garden at Coweeman started with just a few raised beds, two cherry trees and an apple tree, and as of January 2022 is home to five raised beds, 13 mounded beds, a beautiful arbor with Canadice and Himrod grapes growing on it, a shed with plenty of supplies, two Asian pear trees, 7 blueberry bushes, golden raspberries, perennial herbs and flowers, asparagus, and a rotation of other annual and perennial veg, fruit and herbs.

Coweeman's Garden Club is somewhat unique in that it's an official ASB Club at the school, so that means students get to elect a Garden Club President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary each school year. Being so close to Kelso High School, Coweeman Garden has also been really delighted to see so many Garden Club alumni returning to help as volunteers over the years. More and more this garden is a space that cultivates leadership, builds student confidence and new friendships, along with serving as a space for teaching and learning life skills and so much more.
